agua de sandía [watermelon juice]

Once upon a time I spent a year and a half in Texas as a Spanish-speaking missionary for my church. I spent a majority of my time in the homes of Latino families and was often asked, upon entering a residence, whether I would like some agua. For those of you who have at least rudimentary training in Spanish, you know that agua means water in English. Due to the fact that we were usually walking around in super muggy conditions, sweating profusely, I would always say yes – expecting a regular ol’ glass of water.

Much to my surprise, the agua was not just a boring old glass of water, but a delicious blend of both agua and some kind of fruit. Agua de fresa (strawberry), agua de melón (canteloupe), and agua de sandía (watermelon) were among my favorites. I recently decided it was time to take a trip down memory lane and whip up my own agua.

For those of you who want to use the correct terms – the water blended with fruit mentioned above is often referred to as aguas frescas. If I ever did want just a boring old cup of water – I would use the term agua pura.

Ingredients
  • ½ large, seedless watermelon
  • 6 c. water
  • 1 c. sugar
Instructions
  1. Use a blender to blend the watermelon and water in rounds until it is all liquid. Adjust sugar & water to taste. If you prefer liquid without the pulp (not my personal preference - but I know some of you are pulp haters), use a small strainer to strain it out. This is best if you let it sit for an hour or two in the refrigerator before serving. ¡Buen provecho!
